What is Title VI?

Title VI of the Civil Rights Act is a federal law prohibiting businesses and programs that receive government funding from discriminating on the basis of race, color, and/or national origin. The law states:

“No person shall, on the grounds of race, color, or national origin, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal Financial Assistance.”

This important law applies to transit providers across the State of Nebraska. At the Nebraska Department of Transportation Intermodal Planning Division, we work together with service providers across our state to ensure that public transportation is provided to all residents in a fair, equitable, and nondiscriminatory manner. Read more information about Title VI.

Your Rights Under Title VI

Title VI of the Civil Rights Act prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, or national origin among federally-assisted programs and agencies, including transit providers. If you are a transit rider in the state of Nebraska and you feel you have been discriminated against because of your race, color, or national origin, you have the right to file a Title VI complaint of discrimination. The Federal Transit Administration requires Nebraska to update its plan every three years to meet the changing needs of the state and its communities.
