On September 8, Norfolk’s elected officials, community leaders, and transit employees gathered to celebrate the future of public transit in their city. In 2022 Norfolk will begin a flexroute system and to celebrate this new transit service the city revealed a new name: North Fork Area Transit.

The Mayor of Norfolk, Josh Moenning, Madison County Commissioner Troy Uhlir, and the President of Norfolk Public Transportation, Steve Rames, all spoke, with President of the Norfolk Chamber of Commerce, Austen Hagood, serving as emcee for the event. Moenning and Uhlir noted the increased need for public transit in Norfolk, and the years of work Norfolk Public Transportation, Nebraska Department of Transportation, and their Mobility Management team put in leading to this service change.

At the event Jeanne Doerneman, Norfolk Public Transportation manager, was honored by the Chamber of Commerce and Norfolk community for her lifetime of service to her fellow residents.

When the flexroutes launch in 2022 the service will be known as Forklift, operating three routes across almost 100 bus stops in the community. North Fork Area Transit will continue to provide demand response service in a call-ahead service which will be known as Telelift.

The new service aims to provide affordable, efficient, and safe transportation to the public. The agency received funding from state and federal grants being matched by the City of Norfolk, which noted a 255% increase in ridership over the last couple of years according to the mayor.
