Over 25 people connected to Nebraska transit agencies attended the Midwest Transit Conference in Kansas City, Missouri, September 6-8, 2023. On Wednesday, mobility management sessions were held as well as the opening reception with the vendors. Thursday brought presentations by FTA, CTAA, TSA, AARP, including sessions on multiple transit topics. Thursday evening a Bus Bash was held to view the many vehicles on display and enjoy Kansas City barbeque. Friday morning a Breakfast of Transit Champions was held for several recognitions from FTA and state transit associations. The event concluded with additional informative sessions.




The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) annual awards returned at the 2023 Midwest Transit Conference. FTA recognized both rural and urban providers for ridership increases and total rides provides at the Breakfast of Transit Champions. Historically, the FTA recognizes providers with the annual awards, however, they have suspended the awards event since the pandemic began in 2020.
Nebraska transit providers recognized this year were:
- Metro Transit Omaha for highest urban public transportation ridership among transit systems with a population of 200,000 to 1 million in Nebraska in 2021.
- Central Ride Agency of Nebraska (CRANE) Public Transit for highest urban public transportation ridership increase among transit systems in Nebraska from 2020 to 2021.
- Central Ride Agency of Nebraska (CRANE) Public Transit for highest urban public transportation ridership among transit systems with population less than 200,000 in Nebraska in 2021.
- Ponca Tribe of Nebraska for highest tribal public transportation ridership in Nebraska in 2021.
- North Fork Area Transit for highest rural public transportation ridership increase among transit systems in Nebraska from 2020 to 2021.
- RYDE Transit for highest rural public transportation ridership among transit systems in Nebraska in 2021.
In addition, NATP staff was recognized for its efforts by the FTA to deliver transit education and advocacy in the Midwest.
